There was a lot of good TV this year, and I tried to watch as much of it as I could. We're sure we missed some great stuff . . . but here's our list of the five best hours of TV we watched this season. Don't worry, if you have not seen these particular episodes . . we're going to try to give as little as possible away:
#5 - Glee - The Madonna Episode
I'd never watched Glee before - but this particular episode was so hyped up by FOX, I almost felt obligated to watch it. I wasn't disappointed. Sure, parts of the show were sugar-sweet . . . but it was also hypnotizing watching the cast pay homage to Madonna. Each musical number was done really well, and there were some laugh-out-loud funny parts to the show as well. The whole concept of Glee is brilliant, and this episode was pure magic. It's rare that something as magical as this happens on network TV.
#4 - V - the season finale
V is one of those shows that took its viewers on a unintentional roller coaster ride through the length of its season. The pilot episode was very strong, and then V kind of sank into a bit of quicksand. First, there was a lengthy hiatus which certainly didn't do the show any favors. Second, there was a string of . . well . . uninteresting episodes. But as its freshman season neared its end, V suddenly began to soar. The last few episodes were absolutely terrific, leading to the season finale - which I felt was brilliant. Quite frankly, this is the way an action/adventure show should do its season finale. I'm really happy that V was renewed for another season, and I'm looking forward to episode one next year for sure.
#3 - Castle - the season finale
Whew, what can I say about the season finale of Castle without giving stuff away? There's really nothing I can say about the plot itself . . but I can tell you one thing . . when watching the last 10 minutes of this episode, you could have heard a pin drop in my house. Oh, and the other 50 minutes were pretty darn good too. I have to give huge props to the entire cast of Castle - because their chemistry, as a whole, is second to none.
#2 - Legend of the Seeker - Broken
Tabrett Bethell (Cara) deserves an Emmy nomination for her work in this episode of Legend of the Seeker - which follows the emotional ruin of a Mord'Sith. If you've never watched Legend of the Seeker before, I encourage you to buy the season one DVD of the show or buy Netflix so you can instantly stream each episode from both seasons. But make no mistake about it, Legend of the Seeker is at its best when it takes the focus away from being an action/adventure show, and focuses on the emotions of its characters. That's what makes Broken such a great episode. The episode largely deals with the mythology of the Mord'Sith, and was brilliantly done, I've watched it at least a dozen times by now.
#1 - Chuck - Chuck vs the Other Guy
This is easily the best hour of TV I've watched this year. Nothing comes close. This episode had it all. It's a shame that "Chuck" seems to have to struggle to get renewed each and every year. This is quite frankly the best ensemble cast on TV today, and while on the surface these characters seem "unreal", the fact of the matter is that everyone knows a Chuck, Sarah, Casey, Morgan etc. This particular episode was brilliantly done, and does a brilliant job of closing several story lines . . . and beginning quite a few new story lines. Brilliantly done!
